Veronica comes from an alien race called "Consumers" and the tl;dr of them are "basically Reapers from Mass Effect but as an actual society of people". They're a species of warlike aliens who live deep within the recesses of space and send scouts out every hundred years to find the most apex predator of species in the universe. Then, they find them. They kill them. They eat them.
For Consumers, the eating is ritualistic and a necessary way to continue their existence. After consuming another species, the biological make up of the Consumers change to resemble whatever species they've eaten. Consumers, in turn, don't have a "real" form anymore -- they've been doing this long enough that there are very few Consumers around who remember their first form (and if they're still around, well, they're more like the crazy old person no one wants to be around).
(There's also this whole thing where Consumers are born in... batches. Enough meat is given to the lifeblood of their planet to create new life. The batch of Consumers who are "born" of this end up living together in a community setting, growing and learning with guides whose purpose are to raise and groom these children into becoming part of the overall Consumer society. It's a whole thing.)
There's a lot more to it but essentially it's like this -- because their species is the way they are, with this impulsive biological need to conquer and consume, they're very community orientated and focused on the need of the whole. Whatever batch you're born into ends up being the community you're part of for the rest of your life and your life lasts as long as you continue to eat. There are some Consumers who have never died because they keep consuming and some who choose to die because they're done with their lives and no longer feel the impulse to consume. |
Veronica is one of the youngest Consumers around, born in the last batch even if she's technically a good thousand years old or so. When it comes to her people, Veronica is dedicated and loyal and thinks her community and culture is the best. She's ready to lay down her life for the Consumers at the drop of a hat and supports them immensely. She's the ideal example of a perfect citizen of the Consumer culture. She strives to help her community, she's dedicated her life to serving their military, she has killed and consumed countless of species on behalf of her species. She's a war hero! She's the type of person they put on posters with the tagline JOIN THE DEDICATED FORCE TODAY. She's got it made.
Then she goes to other planets and it turns out the things that make her a hero to her people make her the villain to others. She loves violence, she doesn't have a good scale of morality. She sees other species as not being worthy, being nothing more than meat. Earth is one big cattle farm to her and she sees their attempts towards politics and relationships with one another as futile and pointless. It's the same feeling as when you witness a dog walk around with his bone in his mouth, unsure of where to put it. It's just a bone! Put it anywhere! Oh, you silly dog. That's how Veronica sees humans and human culture.
It doesn't mean she's unable to form connections and make friends with humans (or any other species). There's just always going to be that disconnect where no matter how much you explain how you feel to her, she still doesn't see much point in all of it. At the end of the day, she's the fox and you're the rabbit. There's no reasoning there.
But even with all of that -- Veronica has good traits about her. She's an optimist! She's very caring towards those she finds attachments to. She's a bit of a caretaker as a result of her community focus. If she's attached to someone, she's always going to be making sure they tend to themselves and are happy and if they're not, what can she do to fix it! She looks on the bright side of things, finds the joy in just about everything. She's just happy to be here! She's curious about everything and will poke and prod until she understands how things work. She's very fun to be around.
She's just also, y'know, a monster. Everything's fun and games until she gets hungry. |
